What We’re Doing:
In the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, Food Moxie is more committed than ever to ensuring our vulnerable neighbors have access to healthy food. We know that food insecurity is a daily reality for many in our community, and we are prepared—with your help—to make sure there is ongoing access to healthy foods.
Here’s what we are doing:
- Making curbside deliveries of fresh produce to Stenton Family Manor, a homeless shelter for families, and other partner sites with high need.
- Continuing to provide Hope Kitchen graduates with Fresh Start Kits to scratch cook at home.
- Planting our gardens so that fresh produce continues to be available through the spring and summer. We grow across four growing spaces that have the capacity to produce thousands of pounds of produce. This time of year is critical to maximize production!
- Supporting one-on-one and online group education and providing technical assistance for urban producers around organic best practices including food safety measures that maximize Northwest food production by local producers this season.
- Adapting our current curriculum to support immediate online learning opportunities for students over the next few months.
- Developing curriculum and making plans for Farm Club, Garden Club, Land Lab, Hope Kitchen and other programming, so that we can continue to support high-quality scratch cooking, food production, tasting and eating opportunities with our program participants as soon as groups are able to come together again.
And, importantly, we’re adapting our work to align with best practices for social distancing and safety during COVID-19.
In 2019, Food Moxie provided over 400 non-duplicated individuals with programming that supports our mission of educating and inspiring people to grow, cook and eat healthy foods. This programming happened with groups at Stenton Family Manor emergency housing, Saul and MLK High Schools, and Awbury Arboretum youth and community garden elders.
Food Moxie staff are working hard to adapt to these changing times. We cannot do this work without all of you. In these uncertain times, one thing is certain- more vulnerable Philadelphians will need access to community food security resources than ever. Please support our mission to educate and inspire people to grow, cook and eat healthy foods by making a donation online today to keep our programs going and support emergency programming this spring.
